Audition Information

We can help you find your voice! The Harborlites Chorus is always looking for new singers interested in learning more about the barbershop style and performance. We welcome visitors to our weekly Monday evening rehearsals at any time and interested guests are encouraged to come up on the risers and sing with us.

A singer interested auditioning for Harborlites will be voice tested when she first visits to see which part she should sing and she will be given music to learn for an audition. The ability to read music is not required to be a member of Harborlites — an audition tape and music are available to assist you in learning. At or after your third rehearsal, you may audition.

The audition has two phases: a vocal audition and a visual audition. The vocal audition will include singing to test ability to sing in tune, discern vocal quality, flexibility, tonal memory, breathing skills, and voice range. You will then be asked to sing the audition song in a quartet to demonstrate your ability to sing in a group, in tune, maintaining your part. The visual audition includes a simple physical routine to determine if you have the basic skills required to be an active member of a performing chorus.

Some of our most productive current members did not pass the audition on the first try. However, if you don't qualify the first time, you will receive an evaluation on the areas where you should be working, opportunities to learn new skills while continuing to visit the chorus, and the ability to re-audition.

Complete details of the membership process are available at all rehearsals. We hope to see you there!
