Exceptional Musical Performance by the Harborlites Chorus

The two-time International Champion Harborlites Chorus made a return appearance on Sunday, Jan. 25 in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom.

Under the direction of director, Pam Pieson, the non-stop 90-minute program was packed with exceptional a cappella and barbershop music, choreography, comedy, and two guest quartets that entertained and delighted the large crowd of music lovers.

The Harborlites hail from Huntington Beach, California and was founded in 1960 as a chapter of Sweet Adelines International. Today women from all over Southern California, as well as Nevada, come together once a week to hone their craft of barbershop harmony and high energy performance skills.

Dressed in glitzy teal and black costumes and wearing their third place medals won in International Competition in Baltimore, Maryland in November, the Harborlites opened the program with “Tonight” from the musical West Side Story. Director Pam Pieson was featured in two numbers singing “For Good” from the musical Wicked and Michaels Buble’s popular hit “Feeling Good.”

Sun Lakes residents and former and current Harborlites members Patti Webb, Barbara Sheahan, Barbara Shova, and Nancy Ford were invited to the stage to sing a stirring rendition of “Danny Boy.” With a combined total of 90 years of Sweet Adeline singing experience, these four talented ladies joined the chorus on the risers and expertly performed the number with them.

Another highlight of the afternoon was the quartet, Ms. Cellaneous. Singing “In the Still of the Night,” “Route 66”, and a comedic take on “Love Potion Number 9” entitled “Miss Clairol Number 9,” the award-winning female quartet earned a standing ovation at the end of their program. The Velvet Frogs, a male quartet, was also well received by the crowd with their comedic interpretations of several well-known barbershop numbers.

The Harborlites also got the crowd involved by enlisting their voices in a Sunday afternoon sing-a-long of “Let Me Call You Sweetheart.”

Before the afternoon ended that included a wide spectrum of musical genres, the Harborlites brought back the two guest quartets for a reprise of “Tonight.” It was a  afternoon of spectacular music and high-octane performances that will hopefully earn this award-winning chorus a return visit to Sun Lakes again in the future.
